Ann-Leonie Niss

Ann-Leonie Niss is as a hamburg-based freelance dancer.
She received her dance education at the Erika Klütz School for theatre dance and dance pedagogy in Hamburg and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany.
In 2014 she received a fellowship of the College for Music and Art Montepulciano in Italy and worked intensively together with the sculptor Sabrina Straub. She started to create her own projects and has since then shown TORSE (2015), ratatosk (2017) and Stuck In Square (2017) in England, Germany and Spain. Her artistic work focuses on our inner human processes and their effects on our movement qualities. What can movements transport? How can we make them accessible and perceptible to the audience? She takes up movements of contemporary dance, the martial art Kalarippayattu and forms of design as means of expression for her research.
Since the founding of THE CURRENT DANCE COLLECTIVE, under the artistic direction of Suse Tietjen, she has been a dancer of the interdisciplinary artists‘ collective and has participated in the productions Trans//Form (2016), Meere 2 (2016), Der Strom (2017), Körper//Ich (2018) and Der Flug (2018). Herewith she could be seen among others at the Schweinskopf Festival, the Hauptsache Frei Festival für Darstellende Künste and the Lucky Trimmer Festival. The choreography Flux//Logos was developed into a Virtual Reallity Experience in cooperation with 747 studios GmbH and won the Emerging Artist and Residency Award 2018 at the VRHAM Festival.
As a co-founder of the hamburg-based heterarchically structured women´s collective Kollektiva., she was featured in the 2018/2019 season with the production Chaos is a state of control at the Explosive Festival, the Reeperbahn Festival and the Eigenarten Festival. The focus of their new production deals with the theme of femininity and the facets it brings with it.
She participated in the production EMERGENZ (2019) by the Chilean choreographer José Vidal in co-production with Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik, which was invited to the festival Santiago a Mil in Chile (2020).
As a guest dancer at the Theater Lübeck she has worked in the opera Christophe Colomb (2019/2020) by Darius Milhaus under the choreographic direction of Jessica Nupen.
